Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park protects the site of the largest hydraulic gold mining operation in the country. The destruction of the mountain and the resulting effect upon rivers, creeks, land and agriculture resulted in the first environmental protection law handed down by the federal court in 1884 to control further mining efforts.
